Greatness Of Temple:

A devotee in Tenkasi made a Dog Vahan for Narasimha Sastha and brought it to the temple.??It was placed in the temple for installation the next day.??But when the temple was opened the next day, there was a Nandhi in the place where the dog vahan was left.??It was just the time when people in nearby Purayur were planning to install a Shivalinga found in that place.??Many thought it would be appropriate to take this Nandhi Vahan to the Shivalinga temple in Purayur.??It was taken and installed according to agama rules.??The pujas begin in the temple (in Purayur) at the very Brahamma Muhurt time each day before sunrise.People in this temple light 1008 lamps with Iluppai seed oil during Navarathri festival days to overcome various obstacles they face in life while taking up some endeavours. This helps them to achieve progress, they believe. The temple celebrates Aadi Pooram in July August and Vinayaka Chaturthi and Moola Star day in Aavani-August-September. Paanaka abishek ? a sweet drink prepared with sugar and dry ginger is offered to Lord Sarasimha on His Jayanthi day. Lord Narasimha Sastha with His Sister Annapurani on the right graces the devotees on the banks of Tambirabarani in Kadamaba Kulam facing south.

Temple History:

The story of the timely appearance of Lord Vishnu as furious Narasimha (Lion face with human body) to protect His devotee Prahladha and killing Hiranya by piercing his chest with His sharp nails, is a story known to all.??After killing Hiranya, Lord continued to be ferocious and none including all the Devas, was able to soften the Lord, despite their imploring prayers.??Lord Brahmma said that He could not help in the matter as He was the boon-giver to Hiranya. Prahlada did his best. Lord took him and placed him on His lap and became soft to some extent but not fully. Mother Mahalakshmi was able to bring the fury under control. Yet, according to Puranas, fury still stayed with Lord. His beloved sister Annaprani prayed to Her brother. Responding to Her prayers, Lord Narasimha totally became free of all fury, according to Sthala Purana-local history ? of the place. Lord then bathed in the Saraba Theertha, worshipped Lord Shiva and became all merciful and smiling. Hence, Lord Shiva in the temple is praised as Narasinga Natha Easwaran and the temple too is named accordingly.
