Greatness Of Temple:

Acharya Sri Achuta Prakash belongs to the lineage of His Holiness Kaivalya Theertha following the Bhagavatha Sampradaya of Advaita philosophy.??He was Vasudeva in his earlier life-poorvasrama.??In his new Avatar as Sishya of Kaivalya Theertha, he was named Madhvacharya.??His Holiness Sri Madhvacharya took to Sanyas at Beemanna Gadde.??He established the Dwaita Siddhanta (Dualism) and preached that Jeevatma and Paramatma (Sriman Narayana) are different from each other.??He wrote commentaries on Vedas and appointed Satya Theertha as his disciple.??The famous Udipi Krishna temple came into being only during the period of Shri Madhvacharya.??Sri Satya Theertha established eight mutts, and appointed heads for each.??Besides these Ashta Mutts ? eight mutts ? Beemanna Gadde Pandarkare mutt, Kukke Subramania Mutt, Palagare mutt, Vyasaraya mutt, Uthirathi mutt, Kooli mutt, Mantralaya Sri Raghavendra mutt were established later as sub-mutts-Upa Mutts.?The idols of Sri Rama, Mother Sita and Sri Lakshmana worshipped by Bheema during his forest life ? Van Vas- are in the pujas of this mutt since then till now.

Temple History:

During their life incognito, the Pandavas were in a place called Kaldurgapettu in a fort they built.??There was no water facility.??Draupati requested Bheema to bring water from the?Tunga?River.??Bheema promised to build a dam and bring the water within a single night.??Sages Agasthya and Dhurvasa had their hermitages on both sides of the river and were engaged in penance.??Knowing the efforts of Bheema, they prayed to Lord Krishna to stop the dam work.??Meantime, Bheema had completed the base work with rocks.??Lord Krishna came to the place and cried as a cock announcing the dawn.??Bheema had to stop the work as it was then time barred.???Lord Krishna appeared before Bheema that He only stopped him from the Dam work and advised him not to proceed.???The dam simply stands with the foundation and divides the river into three parts as?Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi in north.??People of the place consider this spot as Triveni Sangam.??The place where Bheema began the dam work came later to be known as Bheemanna Gadde.??The place Durvas performed penance is known as Durvasapuram and the other as Agasthya Halli where he was in penance.King Janame Jaya, son of king Pareekshit came to Tunga River as advised by Sage Naradha to cure his skin problems. He bathed at a place called Harihar, near Shimoga. Sage Kaivalya Theertha was in penance there. The king gave in charity lands measuring about 25 square miles to the sage. The copper plate documenting this charity still exists in the Shimoga Museum. The king got his disease cured. A new mutt was then built on the donated land. It is said that this event happened about 5,023 years ago, as described in the Skanda Purana in Sahyatri Canto.
