Greatness Of Temple:

Since a Marava devotee brought Kali here, She is praised as Kadha Maravar Kali.? She was also known as Kadham Perial.? A festival is celebrated here each year either in Tamil Aadi or Aavani month ? July-August or August-September.? They bring two clay idols as Kadha Maravar Kali on behalf of the people of the village and install it here.? Also many devotees bring such idols of clay as their prayer commitments.? The pujas for these idols would continue till the festival in the next year.? Old idols would be pushed back giving room for the new ones in the following year.? The special prayer commitment is offering Sari to Kali.? Sunch saris are neither sold nor offered free to any one.? They are bundled and placed in a corner of the prakara in the temple. The temple is an open space without a roof leaving Kali to wet in rain and dry in summer. Right of Kali is an idol of Karuppar with a twisted moustache. There is also a shrine for Adaikalam Katha Ayyanar (Ayyanar who gave asylum to some devotee) considered the first deity of the temple. Chinna Karuppar and Peria Karuppar are next in separate shrines. After these shrines, Mother Kadha Maravar Kali is seated at the right corner with all fury in face. There are shrines for 12 Ayyanars and deities by the side of Kali. Those coming to Kali seeking justice from wrong doers, pay a fee of Rs. 51/=. She will deliver the verdict within seven days. Kurathi Amman would awake the wrong doers. Nondi Samban shrine is left of Kurathi Amman. Muneeswararan at the left end cornr appears with a sharp moustache and a sickle.

Temple History:

There lived in Keelkathi village two brothers Peria Maravar and Chinna Maravar. There was also temple for Karuppar. After the sheep sacrifice festival, the brothers used to share the meat equally. Once, Peria Maravar got only a smaller share based on the strength of his family. This hurt the elder. He did not attend the festival next year. The Puja could not take place. Karuppar deity went to Peria Maravar house, dismantled the tiles, jumped in, bundled him and brought to the temple. The puja went as usual. But the share of the meat was only less. Peria Maravar?s wife greeted him simply with all humiliation and said that she would not give him food and added that the deity and the villagers would do it for him. The elder, deeply hurt, left the house without any target and almost reached Ramanathapuram. His legs shook. He fell down. A little girl appeared before him in his slumber promising help. But she was not there when he woke up. He slept again. When he opened his eyes, he found a Kali idol at his head side. He returned to his native place Keelkathi with the idol. Seeing her husband back with the Kali idol, his wife all cool now, treated him with all respect. Realizing the glory of Kali, Peria Maravar installed his Kali under the palm tree near his house. But Kali became too furious and began burning the village. Fire broke out in many places. People died of heat diseases in large numbers. To make Kali cool, they poured paddy and other cereals at Her feet but in vain. People brought Tantriks from Kerala and asked for a solution. They said that Ayyanar alone to cool Kali. The villagers the installed Kali at the southern corner near the Adaikalam Katha Ayyanar. Since then, Kali became all soft and the deity protecting the villagers.
