Temple History:

Chola kings were worshipping Mother Ambica in various forms.??Vikrama Chola I was a devotee of Mother Kathayee.??Once he waged a war against Vamisekhara Pandya.?Pandya was not willing to take the war as it would only end in the death of many precious souls.??He prayed to Lord Chokkanatha to save his land and people from Chola.??Lord came in the guise of a Korava ? a nomadic tribe ? and fought the Chola.?He could not stand the fury of Lord.??He understood that the soldier was none other than Lord Shiva and fell at His feet.Lord Shiva granted Chola His darshan and said that a war for land would result only in human loss and advised him about the futility of such greed. Lord granted him the boon that he would be again born a king and advised him to rule the kingdom righteously and disappeared. He was born again as Vikrama Chola II and continued to worship Mother Kathayee. His relatives caused him many troubles. He fell at the feet of Mother Kathayee saying how he was advised by Lord Shiva in the guise of Korava in his past birth to avoid war and sought Her help to manage when his own men are turning foes. Ambica, responding to the prayer of Chola appeared as a Korathi, spoke to Chola?s relatives and settled the issues. Happy Chola made an idol of Kathayee as a Korathi and installed in the temple.
