Greatness Of Temple:

People of this place strongly believe that those making profits by adulterating food products such as mixing water with milk, milk powder with even lime powder, ghee with fats, selling buffalo ghee as cow ghee may escape from law but not from Lord Chandrasekara. If those cheated this way make an appeal to the Lord, the offender cannot escape punishment.

Temple History:

Athani was once a forest with dense trees. A farmer, Sadayappar by name, used to bring his cows for grazing to this area. One day, a tiger attacked his cow and Sadappar bravely fought the tiger and drove it way but was seriously injured. As Sadayappar and the cow did not return home in time, the villagers set out to find them. The cow returned home carrying Sadayappar. On reaching home, the farmer died and unable to bear the grief, the cow too breathed its last. Bereaved villagers built a platform on the place where the cow died and installed a Nandhi ? the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva and also brought a stone from a nearby canal and installed it as a swayambumurthy and named it as Madheswaran Temple, also known as Sadayappar temple. The farmers in the place were not behaving in the right way. People thought that with a view to teach them a lesson, Lord Shiva came to the place in the guise of tiger, killed Sadayappar and made others to give up wrong life and follow a righteous path. They wanted to calm down the anger of the Lord and prepared the calm looking Chandrasekharamurthy and installed Him and begged his pardon. Later, they also installed Anandavalli with the Lord. There is a five headed snake in front of Lord Chandrasekara. Therefore, the temple is also known as the shrine for relief from the Rahu-Ketu (dragon?s tail and head) adverse aspects. As Lord Chandrasekhara graces with His consort Anandavalli, marriages that were delayed materialize happily. Pradosha pujas (13th day either from New Moon or Full Moon days) are performed devotionally. Lord Chandrasekhara grants profits in agriculture and welfare of cattle. Lord is a swayambumurthy.
