   Sage Markandeya destined with a short life span of just 16 years, was on a pilgrimage to Shiva temples praying for longer life.??He was at Lord Amruthakadeswarar temple at Tirukadayur exactly on the last day of his life embracing the Lord.??Lord Yama waved his rope to take Markandeya?s life.??The rope fell on the Lord Shivalinga.??Furious Shiva tossed Yama with His left leg.?Realizing his folly, Yama made a linga at this place where he fell and sought Lord?s pardon.??Granting his request, Lord reinstated him in the job.??Also as requested by Yama, Lord stayed in this place with the name Emaneswaram Udayar.
