There are five Shiva temples close to each other and the devotee can visit them in a single day. If five Mondays occur in the Karthikai month with the combination of Visaka, Anuradha and Jyeshta stars, Sapthaha Utsav is celebrated in the temple. Such Sapthahas were celebrated in the temple in the years1979, 1986, 1993, 2006 and 2009. When it so occurs, devotees take a bath in the Cauvery and worship at all five Shiva templs. Temple History:

Around the Lord Vaidyanathaswami Swayambumurthi temple in the place, River Cauvery flows in all direction in a circular way. There are Shiva temples in these directions. Lord Argeswara temple is on the eastern side where Sun worshipped the Lord. Lord Padaleswara temple is in the south where popular serpent Vasuki worshipped Lord. Lord Brahmma worshipped Lord Saikadeswara in the temple at the north and the Lord Mallikarjaneswarar temple at the western side is one where Arjuna worshipped Lord. Thalakkadu Vaidyanatheswar temple is at the Kendra point ? centre ? of all these temples. No abishek is performed on Swayambu Vaidyanathar as He rose from an anthill. A metal mask (kavacham) is placed on the Linga. Five hooded Nagabarana also is on His head as a crown. The Linga Bana bears the figure of the face of Lord Shiva. Worshipping Him and consuming the Theertha is a best antidote for poison bites. The sand from the anthill called Kruthika is a Prasad used as a medicine for boils in the body. People use it as tilak on their forehead also. Besides an entrance before the presiding deity, there is another entrance also called Sorga Vasal opened only on the Makara Sankranthi day?Pongal day in Tamilnadu. Devotees call this entrance ?Sorga Padhal Thaialu. The procession of Lord and Mother on the Vrushab Vahan (bull vehicle of Lord Shiva) begins through the Rajagopura entrance at night. This is almost like the Perumal-Vishnu procession on the Vaikunda Ekadasi day. Those who come through this entrance and worship Lord Vaidyanatha will have their seat reserved in Kailash, is the faith of the devotees. There are two Dwarapalakas at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum ? Nandi and Makalar. Nandi is made of male stone and Makalar in female stone. Tapping Nandhi echoes the Kandanatha sound (bell sound) and that of Makalar the Thalanatham sound. This is indeed an outstanding example of the mastery of our Sthapathis in the temple architecture science. Lord Vijaya Ganapathi on a horse appears as a warrior near Makalar. People pray to Him for success in their endeavours. Students pray to Him with red flowers for success in exams. If we cover the legs of the horse, it would appear as a rat, a sculpture miracle. Temple History: Sage Somadatta was worshipping Lord Kasi Viswanatha seeking total salvation. Lord appeared in his dream and advised the sage to to Gajaranyam ? forest of elephants ? in Dakshina Desa ? southern part of the country. Due to elephant troubles, he could not do his penance peacefully. He took the form of an elephant and continued his penance. Two hunters Thala and Kadan came there and aimed at the sage elephant. It missed and hit an anthill from where blood came out. The hunters were shocked. They were told by a voice that Lord Shiva was in the anthill as a swayambu Linga. They were also directed to bring a herbal plant for healing the wound caused by them. The hunters obediently and devotionally followed the advice. Lord Shiva appeared from the anthill and granted salvation to the Sage and also to the hunters. As Lord prescribed the medicine for the wound, He came to be praised as Vaidyanatha. The place was named after the hunters ? Thalakadu.
