Greatness Of Temple:

Dharma ? rules and laws ? left Kubera as he committed a wrong doing urged by a temptation, so also the wealth with him.? Mentally broken and physically tired, Kubera approached Saptha Rishis ? seven sages ? seeking a solution.? They showed their hands to a particular place, that was Tiru Thandigai Puram.? He bathed in the Soma Theertha, worshipped Lord Shiva and Mother Soundarya Nayaki as advised by the sages and got back all that he lost.

Temple History:

What was wrong with Kubera?? Who cursed him?? How was he relieved?? One Velvi Thathan who lived in the country called Kambili had a son named Gunanidhi.? The son did not spend his younger days in learning but spent the wealth earned by his father in wrong ways.? His mother knew that the son was on the wrong path.? Yet, due to her love for the son, she hid the matter from the father.? Father Velvi Thathan came to know of his son?s wrong doings with the support of his mother after some time of his marriage.? He simply left them.? Mother and son were left alone.? Poverty gripped them.
Gunanidhi planned to steal some articles from the kitchen of the Shiva temple on a Shivrathri day. As it was dark, he kindled the wick of the lamp in the kitchen but was caught by the devotees there. Unable to bear the beating, he died. Men of Yama the God of death came there to take Guna Nidhi but were prevented by the Shiva Ghanas ? Men of Lord Shiva - for the one good thing he did that day by kindling the wick of the light in the Shiva temple. He felt the enlightenment in him and was reborn as the son of Arandhaman in Kalinga. He was named Dhaman. He performed severe penance on Lord Shiva.
Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva granted darshan to Dhaman. As Lord appeared too bright with the power of million Suns, he could not see the Lord. He expressed his inability to see Him and begged to grant him sight power to have the darshan. Lord granted his wish. While looking at Lord, he was enticed by the beauty of Mother. With Her angry look, he became blind.
Dhaman did not lose heart but continued the penance with greater intensity and got back the vision of one eye. The other became a golden eye. Lord also gave him the status of being His friend and made him the chief of all wealth. He thus became Kubera. He was also made the ruler of the direction ? north. The venue of Dhaman?s second penance was Thiru Thandigai meaning divine palanquin.
