MahaSakthi Peetas

Sakthi Peethams gives will power, knowledge power, and work power to its devotees. A story was taled about the origin of Sakthi Peethas. According to puranas Dakshaprajapathi son of Brahma had 27 daughters. Satidevi (Parvathi) was one of his daughters. As per advice of his father Brahma, Dakshaprajapathi decided to give Satidevi to Shiva in marriage. While sages performing the Yagna for Lokakalyana, Dakshaprajapathi the king enters. All the invitees and Devatas stood up as mark of respect, except Lord Shiva. This act of Shiva infuriates Dakshaprajapathi. Dakshaprajapathi keeps this act of shiva in mind as an insult.

In due course, Dakshaprajapati himself had undertaken the yagna. He invited all the devatas except Lord shiva his son-in-law. Didichi, a sage by name enquired Dakshaprajapathi about the absence of shiva. Dakshaprajapathi told him, in no certain terms that he had neither invited nor intention to do so. Satidevi notice from Kailasha that devatas were proceeding towards Yagna in their respective mode of journey. Satidevi got hurt that her father did not invite them.

Satidevi, requested Lord Shiva that they should attend the yagna which was being which performed by her father. Shiva refused as they were not invited. But Shiva allowed his wife to go to attend as per her wishes. Satidevi went to Yagna, without her father’s invitation. Neither parents nor sisters pay attention to her. Satidevi felt insulted and immolate in fire. Lord shiva knew this and came to Yagna. He collected body of his wife and roaming here and there with her body. Lord Vishnu noticed this. On the request of Goddesses, Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshan Chakra cut the dead body of Satidevi into pieces. Entire body was cut in to 18 pieces. These were thrown and was become “Sakthi Peethas”. Like that Asthadasa (18) Sakthi Peethas came in to existence. It was said that as per puranas sakthi was formed in different places called with different names. They are as follows.

Another story behind this says that after Satidevi immolated herself in fire, Lord Shiva’s anger is aroused and he comes there, lays the body of Satidevi on his shoulders and performed ‘Taandavam’, in the process of which parts of her body are scattered in the respective places of the earth, forming Saktipeetams.
